Regions of Texas

Texas is too big for one forecast. The state splits into 6 regions, each with its own site — the same maps, the same live radar and the same climate record, scoped to the counties that actually share a sky. Every city in a region gets its own page underneath it.

The 6 Regions

Dallas–Fort Worth
The Metroplex · I-35 · Tornado Alley
OPEN →
The Metroplex sits at the top of Tornado Alley with nothing upwind of it. The dryline fires west of Fort Worth through the spring and the storms track straight across nine million people, hail runs bigger here than anywhere in the country, and the same flat ground that lets the supercells organize lets the ice storms glaze every overpass in January.

San Antonio
Alamo City · I-35 · Flash Flood Alley
OPEN →
The Balcones Escarpment runs right through these counties, and it is the reason Flash Flood Alley is named after them. Tropical moisture that gets shoved up the hills unloads on thin limestone soil that holds nothing — the Guadalupe and the Blanco have run 30 feet over their banks inside an hour, and the low-water crossings are where it turns deadly.

East Texas
The Piney Woods · I-10/20 · East Texas
OPEN →
This is the wet corner of Texas, and the only one with real forest. Hurricanes that come ashore at the Golden Triangle — Rita, Ike, Harvey, Laura — keep enough strength to take the pines down two hundred miles inland, and the same trees turn every ice storm into a week without power. Rain here runs close to 60 inches a year, more than twice El Paso's.

Rio Grande Valley
Brownsville · McAllen · I-69E · The Border
OPEN →
The Valley is the warmest corner of the continental United States and the one most exposed to the Gulf. Hurricanes come ashore here off water that stays bath-warm into November, the rain that does fall arrives in tropical dumps rather than fronts, and the rare hard freeze — 1983, 1989, 2021 — is the event that rewrites the citrus map.

Lubbock
Hub City · I-27 · The Caprock
OPEN →
Nothing breaks the wind up here. The Llano Estacado is the flattest large surface in North America, which is why the dryline sets up over these counties almost every spring afternoon, why the haboobs roll in off bare cotton ground, and why a Lubbock supercell can be seen coming for forty miles.

El Paso
Sun City · I-10 · The Pass of the North
OPEN →
El Paso keeps its own clock and its own climate — Mountain time, Chihuahuan desert, and a year that is bone dry until the North American monsoon turns up in July and drops half the annual rain in eight weeks. The rest is sun, dust storms coming down the pass, and the occasional winter storm that closes I-10 over the Franklins.
